How Does The UCL Group Stage Work?

Just in case you are not too familiar with the UEFA Champions League and how it works, here’s a quick recap.

  • 32 teams participate in the competition, they are drawn into 8 groups. Each group has 4 teams in it.
  • Teams from the same country can’t be drawn in the same group. Each team plays away and at home against every other team in the group.
  • The first 2 classified teams go through to the knock-out stage.
  • The first qualified team will play against a second classified team from another group.
  • The third team of each group is relegated to Europa League.
  • The fourth is out of european competitions.

If you’re wondering how nations are assigned the number of teams they can sign up for the Champions League, I’ve explained it in this article. Also if you’re interested you can also take a look at the UEFA Season Club Coefficient.
