Here we are at the last 7 Serie A match days and the chase for a Champions League is still on for many Serie A teams.
Let’s take a look at the upcoming fixtures of Inter, Milan, Atalanta, Lazio, Atalanta and Roma to see which one of these teams could have an easier time securing a Champions League spot, at least on paper.
Inter will very likely end up third in this edition of the Serie A because of their current standings.
Inter will have to face three big teams in it’s last 7 matchdays:
The first two will be at home, while the match against Serie A runners up Napoli will be played at the San Paolo stadium. Coming away with at least 4 points would be a step forward for Luciano Spalletti’s side.
The rest of the matches will be against:
Ideally, as these aren’t the top sides of the league, Inter should win all of them to be absolutely sure of it’s current third place. They could hope to see Chievo officially out of Serie A and Udinese officially safe for this season, to have an easier time. But this is still to be confirmed.
The rossoneri on paper have an easier calendar than their black and blue cousins. Having seen the last performances though, Milan is it’s own biggest enemy
If Milan give their best against Torino, Bologna, Frosinone and SPAL, they shouldn’t have at tough time. It is important that they do not repeat these last weeks’ performances. At the same time though, today’s upcoming clash against Lazio will be crucial to keep their destiny in their own hands.
As of today, it is clear that Atalanta is the team with best run of form. Their calendar isn’t the easiest as they still have to face Napoli, Juventus and Lazio.
Atalanta have shown that they can beat the strongest teams of this Serie A. They will need the same energy and enthusiasm shown in some of this Seasons memorable matches to claim a Champions League spot.
The other matches will be against:
Atalanta must also win tonight’s match against Empoli to avoid loosing ground to it’s season rivals.
A few months ago, Lazio would have probably been my favorite to secure fourth place. Today, it isn’t the bright and precise team it was before. On paper their last seven matches aren’t the hardest. But they’ll still have to fight for a Champions League spot.
Even though Roma has been having a bad season, everything is incredibly still up for grabs. Granted they still have to face Inter and Juventus, the other matches aren’t the hardest matches they could be playing. Keeping also in mind that by that time Juventus could already be crowned Serie A winners.
Against many odds, Roma could be able to secure a Champions League spot if it manages to avoid loosing points against smaller clubs.
